Before you start, the following are some important performance settings for the Substance plugin when using Decal Designer. Through some testing I've found these settings to help with the Decal Designer workflow.

1) Open the plugin settings in Unreal by going to Edit>Project Settings

3) Scroll down to the Plugins category and click on Substance

4) Hardware Budget

Increase the Memory budget

5) Substance Engine

Change to GPU Engine. This speeds up performance while changing Decal Designer parameters, but is dependant on a good GPU. It also allows for higher resolution texture generation and output.

4K and 8K resolution textures are only possible when running in GPU mode!

6) Max Async Substances

Reduce to the minimum of 4. Substance can batch Substance graph changes, but we want our changes to be visible as soon as possible and so reduce this to the minimum number.

7) Default Substance output

Change the default Substance output to a number which suits your hardware - in my case setting 1024 as the default texture resolution means that Substances are quick to generate when first created in the Unreal Content Browser.
